LA Auto Show Preview: 2010 Bentley Azure T

Life is often divided into questions of nuance. No matter the subject, clear cut answers are hard to come by. For instance, when is enough enough? When does indulgence become decadence?

Bentley, an automaker well acquainted with indulgence, will release their newest convertible at the LA Auto Show next week. We've got an early preview.

With lines that recall the first post-war Bentleys, the Azure received an enthusiastic reception as a concept car at the 2005 Los Angeles Show. The production version retains much of the concept car's character and is instantly recognizable as a successor to the 1946 Mk.6 drophead coupe.

Significant time and effort has gone into making the Azure T’s folding roof attractive as well as highly functional. Operated hydraulically at the touch of a switch, the Azure T's three-layer canvas roof is elegantly stowed beneath the rear parcel shelf in a matter of 25 seconds. Because the roof is held in a separate well area, there is no impact on the generous trunk space which was designed to hold two sets of golf clubs and hand luggage.

As impressive as its stately dimensions is the Azure T's immense power. 500 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque are on tap, courtesy of a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mated to a six-speed ZF automatic transmission. Each engine is assembled by hand at the factory in Crewe; the signature of the build team leader is engraved into a plaque fixed to the intake manifold.

With 90 percent of peak torque available from 1800 rpm to 3800 rpm, the Azure vaults toward the horizon with zeal. 60 miles per hour is accomplished in a mere 5.2 seconds, whilst on the way to a top speed of 179 mph.

Keeping the powerful and weighty Azure T composed are a set of computer-controlled, adaptive electro-hydraulic dampers with automatic ride height control and load compensation. In addition to countering acceleration squat and brake dive, the Azure T's dampers will counteract body roll, delivering impressive control in all driving conditions.

Twenty-inch alloy wheels with 255/40 ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tires further improve handling and road holding. When equipped with the optional brake upgrade, each wheel houses the largest set of brake discs available on any production car in the world.

Measuring 420 by 40 mm in front and 356 by 28 mm in the rear, these massive carbon-composite discs are clamped by eight-piston calipers front and rear. In addition to 16 pounds of weight savings, the carbon discs are designed to last the lifetime of the car while offering nearly fade-free performance.

Building a Bentley is an intensely personal affair. To suit, the British automaker offers 42 exterior paint colors, eight different wood veneers and 25 different leathers to furnish a customer's Azure.

Befitting its role as Bentley's new flagship convertible, the Azure T embodies a range of new standard features. The seats and door panels are covered in diamond quilted leather. The dashboard features an ‘engine-turned’ aluminum finish reminiscent of 1920s racing Bentleys, and the instrument faces are finished in black rather than parchment.

Yet beneath the traditional Bentley cues lies a raft of modern technology.

The Azure T's stereo head unit now reads audio files stores on an SD memory card rather than from a compact disk. As an option, Azure T buyers can specify a premium audio system designed by Naim Audio, a UK-based high end hi-fi manufacturer. The upgraded audio system features 10 speakers, a dual-channel subwoofer and an 1100 watt amplifier, plus eight individual equalizer modes to reproduce a ‘live’ concert-like experience.

Like the Continental T and Arnage T before it, the Azure T carries on the tradition of modern sporting Bentleys, cars known for their sybaritic luxury, sporting character and titanic performance.

Which leads back to one of those precious clear-cut answers.

Enough is never enough.

2010 Mini Cooper Convertible pics, JCW tuning details leaked

Thanks to a tipster at Mini enthusiast site MotoringFile.com, we've got an early preview of the 2010 Mini Cooper Convertible. The new ragtop convertible is set to debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January and go on sale in Spring 2009.

The styling changes are subtle and evolutionary, taking their lead from the tin-top Mini Cooper and Cooper S which went on sale in 2007. Among the changes are a new gloss black trim option for the Mini's headlights and window line trim, both of which have historically been chromed.

The old convertible's prominent (and view blocking) fixed roll bar has been replaced by an integrated pop-up roll bar system similar to those found on the BMW 1 and 3 series convertibles. The new convertible top also has a larger glass rear window with integrated rear defroster.

All of these changes should improve visibility behind the car, but the broad swaths of fabric at each corner will still make lane changes a tense proposition when the top is up.

New "Always Open" Gauge
Another new development is the addition of a new "Always Open" gauge. Unique to the new Mini Cooper Convertible, the new gauge indicates the number of miles driven with the top open. Positioned to the left of the Cooper's tachometer, the new gauge is intended to encourage drivers to drop the top whenever possible.

New colors; JCW kit on sale at launch
New color choices will also debut when the new convertible hits the streets next spring. Interchange Yellow (top left) and Horizon Blue (bottom left) will be available, along with the Hot Chocolate canvas top color. A denim blue top will also be offered, but we don't have pictures of it just yet.

According to MotoringFile, the new Mini Cooper S convertible will be offered from launch day with the factory optional John Cooper Works tuning kit.

The JCW kit includes an upgraded intake and exhaust along with a reprogrammed ECU with a more aggressive boost curve and higher peak boost. The kit is expected to cost about $2000; a JCW-tuned Cooper S will churn out 192 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, with 200 pound-feet of torque available on a limited basis when the factory overboost setting is engaged.

The JCW kit can also be installed after at the dealer for those who either buy off the lot or wish to add power to their Cooper ragtop after purchase.

Early rumors coming from MotoringFile say that March 2009 is the projected on-sale date. As the Detroit show draws near, we'll have more details on pricing and trim updates as well. Stay tuned.

Lexus IS Convertible debuts at Paris, on sale Spring 2009

After years of rumors, test mule sightings and heavily disguised prototypes, the production Lexus IS250C convertible debuted just hours ago at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

When they arrive in dealer showrooms next spring, the US market will get both the IS250C and the more powerful IS350C. The rumored IS-F version has been ruled out.

Both convertibles share the same drivetrain as the IS250 and IS 350 sedans., The IS 250C features a 2.5-liter, 204 hp V-6 mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission; the IS 350C is powered by a 3.5-liter, 306 hp V-6 with a six-speed automatic.

The new IS convertibles' showpiece is a retractable three-panel aluminum hardtop that opens in 21 seconds, faster than any other hardtop convertible on the market, Lexus claims. A three-panel hardtop was chosen to preserve trunk space; with the hardtop stowed, a golf bag will fit with ease in the IS250C's commodious trunk. Two will fit with the hardtop raised.

Golfing aspirations aside, the new convertibles' design strikes a middle ground between innovation and familiarity.

The former is accomplished by the sheer volume of unique sheetmetal. While they borrow their engines from their four-door cousins, the new convertibles are built on a unique platform with doors that are nearly a foot longer than those of the sedans.

The front windscreen has been lengthened to combat turbulence inside the car at speed. While a tranquil cabin at 80 mph is important, the long windscreen has forced a trade-off that leaves the IS convertible looking a bit awkward with the top up.

The strongest design element of the IS sedan came from it's tautly arched roofline. Appearing more coupe like than most of its competitors, the sedan's profile evoked speed even when parked.

It's here where the design of the IS convertible weakens; the taut roofline of the sedan gives way to a flat center section that looks more Quasimodo than Usain Bolt. I'll admit I'm nit-picking on this point, but not without mentioning that if the the car was a few inches shorter, this would be a non-issue.

Fortunately, things improve dramatically with the top down.

The hardtop disappears completely under the trunk lid and a hard tonneau cover, both of which envelop the rear seat in a fashion reminiscent of the 911 Speedster. The trunklid is deeply sculpted, preserving some of the sedan's coke-bottle flair. A new fog lamp design debuts out front; new LED taillamps appear out back, along with an LED brake light integrated into the rear spoiler.

Yet despite the dramatic changes, the new convertibles seem like familiar members of the IS family by using the same hood, headlamps, door handles and mirrors as their sedan counterparts.

As with all Lexus offerings, safety and luxury are paramount.

For the former, a veritable alphabet soup of active safety systems com standard. VDIM and VSC keep the car pointed where the driver intends. When those systems give up, ABS, PCS and SRS all step in to save the driver and passengers from harm. Those riding in the rear are protected by side airbags as well as a pair of integrated roll bars, which are trimmed in leather to match the interior.

Speaking of which, a raft of new features have been added to provide a consistent atmosphere between coupe and convertible driving. The instrument gauges have been revised to increase visibility during top-down driving. The climate control system now offers a speed-sensitive control system that boosts air flow when the top is down as well as adjusting to vehicle speed.

The sound system also uses an active-listening equalizer. When the top is stowed, the system also automatically adapts to the natural loss of bass and boosts low frequency sound to compensate.

Pricing has not been announced, but it is safe to assume prices will be close to the 2009 BMW 3-series convertibles. Expect the IS250C to sticker in the mid-$30K, with the IS350C selling in the mid-$40K range.

Confirmed: Lexus IS convertible will debut at Paris Motor Show

After nearly two years of speculation over a rumored IS convertible, Lexus confirmed today that the production version will make its press debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 2nd.

The 204-horsepower IS250 convertible will be the first model to hit US dealer showrooms, to be followed closely by the more fleet-footed, 306-horsepower IS350 convertible.

The engines and drivetrains carry over unchanged from their sedan counterparts with one notable exception — the IS250 convertible will not be offered with the IS250 sedan's optional all-wheel-drive system.

Lexus has yet to say whether the fire-breathing, 400-horsepower V-8- powered IS-F sedan will sire a convertible version.

Early predictions suggested that a cloth top would be used partly in an effort to keep costs down. Yet as the latest spy shots from AutoTelegraaf show, the new IS convertible will feature a retracting hardtop similar to the current BMW 3-series convertibles.

Stay tuned; as the reveal date draws near, official pictures will be forthcoming.
